Principal's Message

Welcome Mariners,

I am excited and honored to serve the students, parents, and the entire Down East Community as the Principal of East Carteret High School. I am originally from Goldsboro, NC. My wife, Helen, and I moved here 5 years ago. Helen is currently a Special Education Teacher at Morehead Middle School. We are passionate about education and believe that all children can learn and experience success. Our hobbies include fishing, boating, watching football, and spending time with our four kids: Hollie, Addison, Dillon, and Austin.

My journey in education started as a lateral entry business/marketing teacher at Charles. B. Aycock High School in 2001 after spending twelve years in a family business. I taught and coached at Charles B. Aycock and Clayton High School for thirteen years. My coaching experience includes football, golf, indoor and outdoor track, and girl's softball. In 2014, I transitioned into administration, where I served at Wilson Fike for two years and Croatan High School for four years as an assistant principal.

It is a privilege to have the opportunity to be a part of the Mariner family. I value the tradition and excellence of East Carteret High School. Our community support is second to none and as we all know East Carteret High is the center and pride of the Down East Community. One day soon, we will be able to return to various events so we enjoy our athletic teams, band, chorus, drama, and other extracurricular events that East is well known for. Until then, we will continue to focus on academics as our dedicated teachers and staff strive to prepare your child for the next step in life and be a productive member of society.

My door is always open, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. It takes all of us to be Mariner Strong!

Sincerely,

Jay Westbrook
